Description
Shut the Box - Shut-the-Box is a traditional game of counting, addition, and probability. Throw dice, use them singly or add them together together. Mark the numbers thrown by flipping flappers or sliding bars over the numbers. Then that player rolls again and repeats the covering of numbers. Play stops when the dice can no longer be used. When more than one player competes in the game, the lowest score wins the game. Players can compete to determine who buys the coffee or other drinks! Or in a household, low score doesn't have to do a specified chore!
HISTORICAL NOTE: The game has been popular for centuries among sailors and fishermen. It's not known for sure where the game originated, but as early as the 12th century some references point to Normandy or the Channel Islands. Lore tells fables of ancient Norman sailors playing the game in the moonlight as their ship bobbed and swayed across the sea. Sources also mention fur trappers from the Hudson's Bay Company. In the 18th century, Norman fishermen enjoyed this game after a long day at sea. This game is enjoyed by all ages 7 to 137 years. Not all luck! Some tactical choices are required.
